Unexpected Wood-1972

Here's a nicely drawn but little-known late period horror tale from DC's THE UNEXPECTED. Written by EC veteran Carl Wessler, GCD credits Wood with sole pencils and inks but I'm pretty sure I detect other hands in this, also--possibly layouts and pencils. Enjoyable all around, though. Any of my experts out there know for sure?

  1. The ever-alert Alan Kupperberg suggests possibly pencils by artist Jack Abel with whom Woody was sharing studio space at the time.

  2. Something about the large faces on the first and last pages especially look like another hand involved. Looking for Wood's 'trademark' panels that work, there are only one or two that really fit that mold. I would certainly trust Mr. Kupperberg's assessment, as I would only be guessing as to who the additional artist(s) could be. Whether all Wood or not, there's enough Wood to make this a pretty nice one! I never saw this before. Thanks Steve!

  4. Yeah, I'm seeing LOTS of Abel in those pages.
